We are an independent member of The Arts Society which is based in UK. The Arts Society was formerly known as the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS). In 2017 it was decided that the term decorative and fine arts no longer described accurately its wide range of arts-related interests and activities and the society changed its name. As a member of NADFAS we, too, changed our name in 2017.
The Arts Society has over 380 societies throughout the UK, and there are now 13 Societies in Europe and 24 in Australia. Together they represent a worldwide membership of over 90,000. The Arts Society Nerja is a thriving society with over 200 members.
Our primary aim is to further the enjoyment, knowledge and awareness of the Arts internationally, and to stimulate interest in the artistic heritage of Spain.
The season of activities runs from October to May. For the 24-25 season we are offering 11 lectures, 6 of which are given by The Arts Society lecturers. They cover a wide range of artistic, historical and cultural topics.
We organize several art-related one day trips per season, plus a multi-day cultural tour to various parts of Spain and Europe, as well as social and cultural activities.
We organize activities so members can meet each other. Sometimes there is a dinner after a lecture. Everyone is welcome, but you must book beforehand with the dinners co-ordinator – a booking form is available on the website for a couple of weeks before the lecture.-
We organize a Coffee morning in November for New Members to get to know them and so they can meet other new members. This is followed by a talk in the Museo de Nerja.
We aim to support Art projects using art as a tool to stimulate personal development. Read about it on our charity page
The Arts Society Nerja is a non profit making society (Asociación sin ánimo de lucro) but when we find ourselves with an unplanned surplus, we reach out to support other charities, often related to Art.
We have as one of our most important aims to support Charities in order
• to make a difference in people’s lives
• to develop skills and personality
• to heal
• to enjoy and have a great time
• to stimulate young artistic talent to excel.
We are continuing supporting this project where Antonio Guerra gives weekly classes at the school where there are many children from families that are struggling. There is a group of 15 girls and one boy.
In October 2024 the children will perform in the Centro Cultural Nerja to show us what they have learnt.
In October 2023 we held a competition for young talent in Teatro del Carmen in Vélez Málaga. Paula Coronas, Babak Eshraghi and Elena Pisonero, all professional musicians, were our jury.
We donated 9 prizes in 3 age categories. Paula Coronas donated the Paula Coronas prize for the best interpretation of a Spanish composer. The level was incredibly high. We organized two concerts for the winners to be able to shine and gain stage experience in El Molino in Cajiz and in Ateneo in Málaga.
A part of the profit of the sales of works of art in the Exhibition in February 2024 went to 2 charity projects: Flamenco dance classes for Colegio La Gloria and the Foundation of Ostroh Academy, western Ukraine which supports displaced persons from the east of the Ukraine who have sought shelter at the University. The foundation also helps refugees to resettle in de-occupied and ruined areas of eastern ukraine.
